Here’s another treasure, a piece which is guaranteed to make me smile: Pachelbel’s well-known Canon in D. A ‘canon’ is rather like a round, in which several instruments play the same melody but with slightly different starting times, creating a harmonious effect, and music composed in the key of D major is supposedly particularly good at lifting the mood.
Perhaps it is this combination of the soothing and the uplifting that makes me appreciate the Canon as much as I do. Whatever the reason, it’s earned a place in my treasure trove.

Listen to Pachelbel’s Canon in D
Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was a German composer during the Baroque period who is today overshadowed by the likes of Vivaldi, Bach and Handel. During his lifetime, however, he enjoyed great popularity, having many students and influencing music throughout south and central Germany.
Is there a piece of music that just makes you feel happy?
